Our Core Principles

At Making Peace Visible (MPV), our work is guided by principles that support:

a).  Journalists and the media in utilizing new approaches to conflict reporting and showcasing peacebuilding, and

b). The public by advancing understanding, engagement, and solutions to conflict.

Collaboration

We believe that meaningful dialogue is the foundation of both journalism and peacebuilding. We actively foster connections between journalists, media professionals, and peace practitioners to promote stories that illuminate solutions rather than division.

Equality and Inclusion

All human lives hold equal value, and dignity is the birthright of every individual. Because traditional media often amplifies voices in power, we are committed to uplifting and centering perspectives historically marginalized in conflict narratives.

Journalistic Independence

We uphold press freedom as essential to democracy and peace, as articulated by the First Amendment to the US Constitution. As a nonprofit, we remain independent and do not advocate for specific policies or political agendas beyond these fundamental freedoms and a demonstrated preference to make peace more visible.

Commitment to Nonviolence

We believe nonviolent strategies are the most effective means of conflict transformation. Through our work, we elevate voices and narratives demonstrating the power of diplomacy, dialogue, and nonviolent resistance.

Nuance and Depth

Conflict is complex, and the truth is rarely binary. We challenge simplistic narratives and strive to cultivate depth, context, and multiple perspectives that foster informed public discourse.

Authentic Representation

Media shapes public perceptions and representation matters. We ensure a diversity of voices across our platforms—including the Making Peace Visible podcast, NUANCE publication, and public events—by considering factors such as race, nationality, geographic location, sexual orientation, gender, religion, and lived experience.
